turning wine back into water

“I have told the glad news of deliverance in the great congregation; behold, I have not restrained my lips, as you know, O Lord. I have not hidden your deliverance within my heart; I have spoken of your faithfulness and your salvation; I have not concealed your steadfast love and your faithfulness from the great congregation.” — Psalm 40:9-10

One of my very favorite stories in the Bible is one that is familiar to many. It comes out of John 2 when Jesus was attending a wedding in Galilee alongside his disciples. They ran out of wine and Jesus had six water jugs (each holding twenty to thirty gallons mind you) filled with water. And then he did the unthinkable, he turned all of the water into wine.

Now this isn’t my favorite story due to my passion for weddings or wine… but because of the last line of the story:

“What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs through which he revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him.” John 2:11

THE FIRST SIGN OF HIS GLORY! The first time that humans saw his power in plain sight. Gosh, what I would give to be an attendant at that wedding! To see water go into a jug and wine come out – what an amazement! Something a human mind cannot capture! I would tell everyone I know, about this “magic trick” of an event that I saw. I would post it on Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat, and Linked In.. I would want every single person I know to understand what I experienced!

A reminder that this was the first of the many, many signs that Jesus used to reveal the glory of God. Within the palm of our hands, we can hold a book that has hundreds of stories just like this one. And he has written hundreds more in my life and yours too. And who am I telling? Not enough people – not even close. See, God is the greatest Author of all time, He has written every single one of our days in His book. And He does BIG things in each of our lives, just like he did when he turned water into wine.

So when we see the glory of God revealed, we should be SHOUTING IT to everyone we know – we should be so zealous about the works of God in our lives that we should share with all of our friends, and strangers too!

When we keep it to ourselves, we are basically turning wine back into water.

We are called to go out and tell people about the glory of God. And it’s easier than ever in this day when we can post on social media and immediately hundreds of people can see it. We have so many opportunities to talk with other people as we go through our day to day. But we become fearful for various reasons: we think people aren’t going to listen, or that they won’t care, we think that what is happening in our lives is not big enough to pay attention to, and so many more lies that we place in our minds. Who are we to say that what God is doing in our lives is not good enough to share?

So I challenge you. I challenge you to share more about what God is doing! Let’s stop turning wine back into water and tell others about the miracles the Lord is doing every single day. People will listen, and their lives may be changed for it. God calls us to go, show, and tell.

Allll the glory is YOURS, Jesus!

“We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God.” -2 Corinthians 5:20
